Program Overview

MIT-WPU believes that Research is an essential part of higher education system and is critical to societal development. It generates knowledge, provides useful information, and helps decision-making, among many other benefits. In view of the long tradition of academic excellence and under the guidelines prescribed by the University Grants Commission, MIT WPU offers the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

School of Mechanical Engineering

The rules for admission to the Ph.D. program and the duration of Ph.D. program are as per the guidelines of University Grants Commission and academic ordinances/regulations of MIT-WPU. For admission to Ph.D. Program, students should have cleared a Master’s degree in the appropriate stream from a recognized institute of repute. The students are expected to complete course work and undertake research work that is original work characterized either by the discovery of facts, or by a fresh approach towards the interpretation and application of facts, or development of equipment making a distinct advancement in technology. Ph.D. degree is granted for research work in areas recognized by the academic School.

MIT WPU thrives on a strong research culture that nurtures creativity and promotes investigation for a social benefit. The University believes in establishing support systems that boost morale and enhances a positive research culture. The faculty are encouraged to contribute their research findings in referred journals and calendar conferences, filing patents, IPR and converting the research into product/prototype. MIT –WPU has research collaborations with various research organizations and industries. Most of the schools have received research funding from various funding agencies in India and abroad.

Cryogenics, Automotive Engineering, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Heat and Mass Transfer, Renewable Power, CFD etc.

Manufacturing Technology:

Advanced Materials, Nano materials, Digital Manufacturing, Metal Forming, Additive Manufacturing, Optimization of Manufacturing Processes etc.


The School of Mechanical Engineering at MIT-World Peace University strives to establish continuous and long term interactions and collaborations with various organisations of repute for the benefit of Students and Faculty. The school forges partnerships with outstanding academic and other institutions across the globe to expand the student experience and aims to provide high quality educational experience to students.

We received Funded Research Projects from reputed organisation such as Armament Research and Development Establishment (DRDO), AICTE, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Department of Science and Industrial Research (DSIR). Total funding received by school since last five years is more than 90 Lakhs.

Faculty members have published Indian Patents, Australian Patents and various publications in the peer reviewed and Scopus indexed Journals.

Eligibility and selection process is as per UGC notification 5th May 2016 (Minimum standards and procedure for the award of M. Phil/Ph.D. degree regulations 2016) and 1st amendment by UGC on 27th Aug 2018 and 2nd amendment on 16th Oct 2018.Subject to the conditions stipulated in these regulations, the following persons are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. program :

  • Master’s Degree holders satisfying the criteria stipulated below

    Candidates for admission to the PhD program shall have a Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

    A relaxation of 5% of marks from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

  • Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated programme. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time

  • A person whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. program of the same Institution

  • Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. program.

Selection Process 

  • MIT-WPU is looking for bright and dedicated scholars interested in research to join us as Ph.D. scholars for Academic Year 2020-21. Prospective students satisfying the eligibility criterion are encouraged to apply for Ph.D. Programme on www.mitwpu.edu.in

  • Candidates satisfying eligibility criteria will be informed to appear for the Ph.D. entrance test conducted by MIT-WPU as per the UGC guidelines. University may decide separate terms and conditions for Ph.D. entrance test for those students who qualify UGC-NET ( Including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET ( including JRF)/SLET/GATE/Teacher fellowship holder or have passed M. Phil programme.

  • The Ph.D. entrance test shall be qualifying with qualifying marks as 50% provided that relaxation from 50% to 45% shall be allowed for the candidates belongs to SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy layer)/Differently abled category in the entrance examination conducted by the university
    The syllabus of entrance test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

  • The interview/viva-voce will be conducted by the university for test qualifying candidates. For the selection of candidates, a weightage of 70% to the entrance test and 30 % to the performance in the interview/Viva-voce shall be given

Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is a well-known Automotive Research, Development, Testing & Certification Institute in the country under the Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Govt. of India.

ARAI Academy is a Skill Development initiative of ARAI, located on a 5-acre area in the middle of Industry at Chakan with education excellence over the last 15 years. Research Scholars would have open access to various labs like Containerized Engine Test Cell, Noise & Vibration, EMI/EMC, Automotive Engineering Systems, Automotive Electronics & Embedded Systems, CAE & Design and latest software such as Altair, Ansys, AVL, GT and Ricardo through the Simulation lab. About Ph.D. program in association with ARAI

The design and development of present-day automobiles lay more emphasis on safe, smart and sustainable mobility. More and more research is required in connected, autonomous, shared and electric mobility. R&D efforts in these fields need to address issues such as emission, climate change, fuel economy, noise, vibration and harshness, alternate energy, design of powertrain, electric & hybrid vehicles, advanced automotive materials and manufacturing, vehicle crashworthiness, structural dynamics, electronic control and embedded systems, mechatronics, information technology, recyclability, etc. There is a need to carry out cutting-edge research in the aforementioned areas.

ARAI and MIT-WPU have agreed to pool their resources to support research work leading to a Ph.D. Programme. Both ARAI and MIT-WPU will recognise the expertise and the research adequacy for each research work undertaken. MIT-WPU, by virtue of being a University, shall award Degree in association with ARAI, as per its statute and rules & regulations.
